Jerez grew up on the site of the ancient Iberian village of Hera, colonized by the Phoenicians. Due to its location during the Roman Empire, Jerez was one of the roadside towns on the great Roman route, Via Augusta, with the name Seret.
Cadiz, the oldest city in Spain.
Cadiz is the oldest city in Spain, founded by the Phoenicians around 1100 BC and claims to be the oldest city in Europe. The Phoenicians called him Gadir or Gader, the Greeks called him Gadir or Gadeira, the Romans called him Hades.

From the Phoenicians Hades was taken away by the Carthaginians. Among the Greeks and Byzantines, Cadiz was considered the “edge of the world”. After the Second Punic War (206 BC) Hades went to the Romans. Caesar gave the city municipal rights. At the end of the first century BC, the geographer Strabo considered Hades the second most populous city in the Roman Empire. Later, Cadiz fell under the rule of the Vandals, Visigoths and Arabs. In 1262 the city was conquered by Castile.
