Jerez de la Frontera

Walks in Jerez de la Frontera

Description:

The tour takes place in the center of the city, here you will learn the history of origin, for example, the fact that in ancient Rome, the settlement, renamed Seret or Keret, occupied a special position. And a few centuries later, when the city was under the rule of Muslims (711-1264), the production and sale of wine brought considerable income to the state. By the way, the Arabs called Seret Sherish. Local wine under this name came to England, where it was appreciated. Since then, sherry has been known as sherry. You hardly knew. The history of Jerez is diverse and very interesting, visit the Alcazar-Arab fortress, built in the XI century. On its territory is a mosque, which Christians later turned into the Church of St. Mary (Santa Maria). In Jerez, some sections of the fortress wall were preserved, erected in the XII century by the Almoravids and Almohads. And also look at the Cathedral, which was built in the second half of the XVIII century by Diego Moreno Melendez on the site where until 1695 stood the Church of Christ the Savior, converted from a Muslim mosque after the conquest of the city by Christians in 1264. In the cathedral is the image of the Virgin, written by Francisco de Zurbaran.
