Almodovar Castle

Description:

Castillo de Almodóvar is located at 22km.
From Cordoba, in the small town of Almodovar del Rio. It is a military fortress of Arab origin, its construction dates back to 740.

The fortress was extremely important in the defense of the city of Cordoba for its strategic location, as it is located on a hill about 260 meters high near the Guadalquivir River. The fortress controlled the river and land routes from Seville to Córdoba.

Many rulers used the castle as a personal residence. Later, for centuries, it served as a prison as well as a stash of royal treasures. From the towers of the castle offers a beautiful view of the surrounding fields, the Sierra Morena mountain range, the town of Almodovar del Rio, located below, and on clear days you can see the snow-capped mountain peaks of Granada.

Like any ancient castle, Almodovar has its own ghost. Every year, on March 28, the beautiful Princess Zayed wanders around the castle, who for more than nine hundred years can not wait for her husband Fath al-Mamun who died on this day in 1091.

As a result of restoration processes, today Almodovar Castle is one of the best preserved in Spain.

There is a restaurant on the grounds of the castle. Lunch is served without cutlery, as it was in the days of Pedro I "Cruel", with the staff dressed in medieval costumes.

The doors of the castle are open for solemn events (wedding, baptism, communion)
