Today it is hard to imagine that in the 19th century Marbella was the region with the most developed mining industry in all of Spain, with blast furnaces for smelting iron ore mined in the mines of the Sierra Blanca Mountains. But over the past hundred years, the city has transformed from a highly industrial center into a first-class tourist resort.
Despite the fact that large-scale development has advanced inland from the coastline, you can still find extensive groves of old cortical oaks, pines and olive trees in Marbella. Together with private gardens and golf courses (of which there are 14), they make up a beautiful green background – a real natural attraction that attracts wealthy tourists.

The church of La Encarnación was built in 1618. It is famous for its amazing baroque facade of red stone. At the end of its central nave is a semicircular presbytery covered with a dome. The statue of San Bernabé, the patron saint of the city, can be seen next to the main Baroque altar.
The Arab fortress is completely lost among the city houses, except for the tower and part of the wall, which are in very good condition.
Renaissance, Gothic and Mudéjar styles blend harmoniously in the building of the San Juan de Dios Hospital, built in the 16th century. The chapel of La Misericordia can still be seen today. The lower stone part of the facade of the building contrasts sharply with the whitewashed walls of the bell tower. With a stone portal, with wooden gates bearing the royal coat of arms and the emblem of the Order of San Juan de Dios. The whole building is covered with a ceiling of wooden structures.
