Belmonte Castle
Description:
Belmonte Castle was built by the ancient Romans and has survived to this day almost in its original form.
The construction of the fortress began in 1456 by the Marquis of Villena, Don Juan Pecheco, by decree of King Henrique IV. In Belmont, the king hid his illegitimate daughter from the attacks of the nobility. After the death of Juan Pacheco, in 1474, the construction of the fortress was stopped, and in the following XVII-XVII centuries the castle was abandoned. By the XIX century, Belmonte turned from a fortress into ruins and was in a deplorable state until Empress Eugene de Guzman began to carry out restoration work.
Now the castle is in the possession of the Duke of Peñarand, a descendant of the sister of the Empress. By the summer of 2010, the fortress of Belmonte was finally restored and opened to visitors. Currently, there is a museum in the castle, and everyone can look at the furniture and decoration of the castle, which was preserved by Empress Eugenia de Guzman.
