Excursion to Ardales and the necropolis of Los Aguilillas
Description:
In the fields surrounding
Ardales, scientists and researchers often find silicon spearheads, bone needles and other items dating back to the Stone Age. But the strongest evidence that these lands were inhabited many thousands of years ago is the burial of the necropolis of Las Aguilillas. This burial of the Bronze Age (1900-2100 BC) served as an invaluable research material for archaeologists and historians. Tableware, decoration, weapons, tools - this is not a complete list of finds made in almost a dozen funeral grottoes and dolmens, built by our distant ancestors on the slope of a high hill, from where such beautiful views of the lakes of Condé de Guadallorse and Guadalteba open. Having visited this not very touristic place, we will plunge into the early history of Humanity. The aura of this place is completely unique. There are no tourist groups. The mystery and tranquility of this ancient resting place does not disturb the vanity of Chinese and Japanese tourists.
Even under the Romans, Pena de Ardales Castle was built, around which the historical center of modern Ardales was formed.
As a city, Ardales was formed under the Arabs, in 716, being conquered by the Emir Al Hurr al Tagafi. He was named Ard Allah, which translates to “Garden of Allah.” The Berbers of the Almoad dynasty built in the 12-13 centuries near the city a huge castle (25,000 square meters), which is now called Estrella (or, in another way, Teba). We will visit this castle and exposition, which is open in the main tower of this ancient fortress.
The city changed hands four times - it was owned by Christians and Muslims, until it was finally conquered in 1453. At the same time, the construction of the church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios began. And the castle of Pena de Ardales turned into picturesque ruins after so many sieges and assaults. Ardales can be considered almost a typical “white village” of Spain. But its rich historical past sets it apart from a number of similarly white-walled villages. And this town is not spoiled by the attention of tourists. If you do not like the tourist crowd, then it is time for you to come here to Ardales. There is an incredible silence and peace that has not been disturbed by the sounds of civilization for many thousands of years. It is in such silence that one should admire the Roman bridge of Puente da la Molina, built in the 1st century NE.
