Trip to the Atlantic Ocean, Tarifa, Hippie Castle and the ancient Roman city of Baelo Claudio

Description:

Tarifa, the southernmost point of Europe and Spain, where the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean meet. The two continents are separated by only 15 km, it seems that Africa is close.

We leave the Costa del Sol, and on the way to the ocean we visit the so-called “Hippie Castle”, Castellar de la Frontera, a village in the Moorish fortress on the mountain, where a hippie colony was formed in the early 80s. Continuing to the south, we pass the majestic cliff of Gibraltar and the bay of Algeciras. Africa appears on the right and we arrive in Tarifa. It was from here, in 711, began the invasion of the Moors on the Iberian Peninsula, the city got its name from the Moorish military commander Tariq, and it was here that the first in the world introduced a fee for imported goods into the port, calling this fee “tariff”. To the west from here begin the luxurious Atlantic beaches with white sand. The winds are constantly blowing here, so Tarifa is one of the best places in Spain to learn and practice kite and windsurfing.

Tarifa restaurants offer a large selection of local seafood, you can try freshly caught tuna, or paella prepared in a family Spanish restaurant.

West of Tarifa is Bologna, where at the beginning of the last century archaeologists discovered the ancient Roman city of Baelo Claudio, one of the best preserved in Spain. More than 2,000 years ago, the Romans founded a city on the coast that had extensive economic ties to the African coast.

Swimming in the ocean, a quad bike tour, horseback riding on the beaches of Tarifa or going to the ocean to view dolphins and whales - all this can be combined with a trip to Tarifa.
