Church of Iglesia de San Juan Bautista

Calle Escalerilla de San Juan, Veles Malaga, Costa del Sol, Spain

Description:

The town of Veles Malaga from Malaga itself is 30 kilometers away. It is less known to tourists, but no less charming. In the ancient city there are the same old buildings. For example, the church of John the Baptist, or Iglesia de San Juan Bautista.

It was founded in the late 15th century on the site of a former mosque. By the middle of the 16th century, the building acquired the features of a Gothic temple with elements of the Mudéjar style characteristic of this part of Spain, which can be seen today. At the same time, a majestic and strict bell tower was built.

The church is Catholic and is notable for its blending of styles (even though it has been rebuilt and changed many times). In addition, there are reports that valuable elements of decoration have been preserved here, for example, the so-called “emerald bowl” of the 18th century and the sculptures of Pedro de Mena.
