Church of Iglesia de Santiago el Mayor
Calle de Granada, 57-59, Malaga, Costa del Sol, Spain
Description:
The church of Iglesia de Santiago el Mayor, or otherwise the church in honor of St. Santiago, is one of the oldest in Malaga. Like most local medieval Catholic churches, it was built on the site of a Muslim mosque in 1490.
The church was built at the beginning of the Christianization of Malaga. In its appearance, the transition from one historical epoch to another is clearly traced, which is expressed in the symbiosis of two seemingly opposite styles: the appearance is Mudéjar, a peculiar style characteristic of Moorish architecture, and inside the church has a Gothic appearance familiar to Catholics. From a historical point of view, it is interesting that it was here in the late 19th century that the world-famous artist Pablo Picasso was baptized.
