Castle de Gibralfaro
Calle Mundo Nuevo, Malaga, Costa del Sol, Spain
Description:
The name of this medieval castle in the Moorish style literally translates as “rock-lighthouse”. It was built as a powerful defensive fortress in the early 14th century. The castle is famous mainly because it was in these fortress walls that the Catholic Castilian kings seized Malaga under their rule after a three-month siege. After the victory, the Spanish king Fernando made the castle his residence.
These days, almost nothing recalls the intense days of heroic battle. Now the ruins of the fortress and several surviving towers, overgrown with forest, look quite peaceful. On the slope of the cliff on which the castle is located, there is a path that offers picturesque views of Malaga and the neighboring fortress of Alcazaba.
