Lorca Castle

Lorca, Murcia, Spain

Description:

Lorca Castle is a powerful building of the IX-XV centuries.

Castillo de Lorca during the Reconquista was a strategic force in the southeastern part of the Iberian Peninsula. The size of the castle is impressive – 640 by 120 meters, which makes the fortress the largest in the province. Excavations of archaeologists have proved that the site of the structure was inhabited in the Neolithic period.

For a long time the castle was considered impregnable, but in 1244 the military forces of Don Alfonso captured it. For two centuries, the fortress served as a point of observation and protection for Christians. In 1931, Lorca became a historical monument of Spain and was included in the list of attractions of cultural interest.
