Palma plus Valdemossa
Description:
Our tour of Palma begins with a panoramic view of Palma, which will open to you from the highest point of the city - Belver Castle, built in the 13th century. The name of the castle speaks for itself - a beautiful view, and indeed, this is the view that fascinates the traveler to the city and the bay of Palma. The building of the castle Belver served the kings of Mallorca not only as a residence, but also an impregnable fortress, later the castle was used as a prison, mint, and is now the historical museum of Mallorca.
Then we will move to the historical center of Palma, where we will walk through the narrow streets of the capital, looking into the courtyards of the houses of the Mallorca nobility of past centuries, and also see the main architectural monument - the Cathedral, which is called the pearl of the Mediterranean, the Cathedral is one of the five largest Gothic churches in Europe.
At the end of the walk we visit the Plaza Mayor, where in the Middle Ages inquisition courts were held and we will finish our tour with a visit to the authentic Olivar market, with its shopping rows, between which you can walk endlessly, there, at the same time, for a symbolic value, you can taste fresh sushi, oysters, and other seafood, enjoying a glass of fragrant white wine. If, of course, time permits, because we still have a charming Valdemossa ahead of us.
Valdemossa is one of the most beautiful villages of Mallorca, located on the hills of the Tramuntana mountain range, about 17 km from Palma. This is a quiet traditional town with narrow streets and alleys, with houses made of white stone, along the doorways of which beautiful green plants and flowers stretch. While walking around Valdemosse, you will often encounter the image of St. Catalina Thomas, who is the patron saint of the city.
Valdemossa’s most popular attraction is the 13th-century Cartesian Monastery, where Frederick Chopin and George Sand spent the winter of 1838–39. There George Sand wrote his work “Winter in Mallorca”. During the tour you will find a fascinating story about these times, about the difficult relationship between Frederick Chopin and George Sand, as well as the story of the first “tourist” of the island – Archduke of Austria Luis Salvador.
In Valdemossa, there are still traditional family bakeries, where it is possible to taste the favorite dish of the locals – “potato pie”, this is a soft sweet product from dough with boiled potatoes, it can be tasted with coffee or hot chocolate.
