Alhaferia Palace

Calle de los diputados s/n, 50003, Zaragoza, Spain

Description:

Alhaferia Castle, located in the heart of Zaragoza, is the jewel of the Spanish cultural heritage of the Islamic period. This XI century palace is the only perfectly preserved Islamic castle in Spain.

Construction of the palace was begun on the orders of Emir Al-Muktadir and lasted for 1065-1081. This building became a true symbol of Muslim power. The palace has a square in plan, and its decorative decoration is strikingly diverse and original.

Alchaferia is not just a palace, but also a fortress. Inside the fortress walls there is a courtyard surrounded by porticoes. From the north and south, the courtyard is surrounded by luxurious rooms and salons. Interestingly, the most important rooms of the palace are located on the north side. Among them is the Golden Hall, or salon. At the end of the XI century, the salon was decorated in blue and red, and the edges were finished with gold. In combination with the marble snow-white columns, this color scheme gave the palace an amazing grandeur.
