Monastery de la Piedra
Nuevalos, 50210 Nuevalos, Spain
Description:
The Monastery of Our Lady was founded in the twelfth century by Alfonso II and thirty Cistercian monks from Poblet Monastery to establish the Christian faith in the Muslim region. The building in the shape of a cross was built in the old castle. The construction of the monastery was carried out in 3 stages: the original Gothic (XIII century), Gothic Renaissance (XVI century) and classical Baroque (from the XVIII century). Porous limestone blocks were used in the construction of the building.
The Cistercian monastery is decorated with pointed arches with capitals and cornices, on which plant motifs are painted. Near the temple flows the river Piedra (“Stone”), reflecting the lights of the monastery, the bridge and lush green flora. River waves form cascades due to the dissolution of limestone and its subsequent precipitation.
Today in the main building of the monastery there is a quiet and cozy hotel for tourists who came to see both the historical building itself and the surrounding flora and fauna.
