Virgo Pilar Cathedral

Plaza de Nuestra Señ ora del Pilar, 19, 50003 Zaragoza, Spain

Description:

One of the main attractions of Zaragoza is the Cathedral of the Virgin Pilar. It's a majestic baroque basilica. In ancient times, an early Christian chapel stood in its place. Then, in the VIII and XII centuries, two more churches and a temple in the Moorish-Gothic style were built on the same site.

The internal volume of the building literally amazes with its impressive dimensions. The three altars of the cathedral are magnificently decorated, one of which houses a statue of the Virgin Mary. The stunning decorative decoration of the dome and vaults is made of marble, bronze, jasper. The dome is decorated with a fresco depicting the Holy Virgin, which was painted in 1773. The painting of the vault in the Baroque style was made by a young aspiring artist Francisco Goya. A decade later, Goya painted the vault, located on the side of the sacristy, in it already feels the firm hand of an experienced master.

One of the main treasures of the Cathedral of the Virgin Pilar is the main altarpiece, made in 1515 by the sculptor Damian Formente.
