Almenar Castle
Almenar de Soria, Soria, Spain
Description:
Almenar Castle is one of the most famous and largest castles in Spain.
In 970, Mozarabs – Christians who converted to Islam – settled on the territory of the fortress. They began to build impressive watchtowers to strengthen positions, and one of these buildings was the castle of Almenar. The castle was a large structure with a square base and served as a sentinel, at the highest point of which messages were transmitted using fires and signal signs.
Since the XV century, Almenar began to be rebuilt in order to turn the sentry into a castle, in which nobles could live during their travels between Aragon, Castile and Navarre. In the early twentieth century, part of the fortress was used as a police barracks. Currently, at the entrance to Almenar, you can see a memorial plaque on which there is an inscription notifying that in 1909 Leonor, the daughter of the constable, as well as the wife and muse of the poet Antonio Machado, was born here. Until the end of his life, the Spanish poet wrote poems for his beloved, staying in the castle of Almenar.
