city gate.
The author of the gate project was the architect Pere Balagher, who supervised the construction of the towers in 1392-1398. Despite the fact that the towers were originally designed as a military structure, in its history they have never been used for their main purpose. During the XVI century, the inner rooms of the towers were used as a prison, in which representatives of the nobility and knights were imprisoned. Torres de Serranos towers were part of the fortress wall surrounding the city, which, in addition to strong walls, consisted of twelve towers. Until 1887, the towers served as a prison, even after the city walls were dismantled in 1865.
