Columbus Market
Jorge Juan, 19, 46004 Valencia, Spain
Description:
Despite its name, this trading center has nothing to do with the great traveler. But the name of the famous discoverer went to the market due to a coincidence. Christopher Columbus named one of the streets between which the building is located.
The Art Nouveau Columbus Market building was built between 1914 and 1916. The author of the project was Francisco Mora Berenger, a graduate of the Barcelona Higher School of Architecture. He studied building art, having close ties with Catalan modernists, carefully studied the works of the famous master Antonio Gaudí. Metal beams and bearing supports, of which the structure consists, create a visual feeling of lightness and openwork, which seems surprising with fairly large dimensions.
The first floor of the building was set aside for shopping. It was possible to get inside through eight entrances, the doors in which were made of metal profile and steel sheets. Entrances are evenly distributed throughout the perimeter of the building. In 2003, expensive reconstruction work was carried out on the market, which has now become an exemplary modern shopping center.
