The Torres de Serrano Gate

Valencia, Spain

Description:

The Torres de Serrano Gate is the best example of Gothic military architecture in Spain. This powerful defensive structure was built at the end of the XIV century. After military battles, the gate was partially destroyed and then rebuilt in 1930. In the Middle Ages, the gate was used as the northern entrance to the city. From their large beautiful towers opens a beautiful panorama of the city.

Beginning in 1586, the upper gate towers were converted into a prison for nobles who fell out of favor with the church. The prison lasted until 1887, which saved the gate from destruction. Today in the towers there is a naval museum of antiquity, where you can learn a lot of informative and interesting about ancient battles. The exposition of the museum also covers many marine finds made by underwater archaeologists.
