Castel de Papa Luna Castle

peniscola, Spain

Description:

Castel de Papa Luna is one of the most famous medieval castles in Valencia. It is located high above the Mediterranean Sea and can be seen far beyond the city limits.

The castle was built in the XIII century by Knights Templar on the site of a former Arab fortress. The Templars carved their order of stone and placed it above the castle gate. In the XV century, within the walls of the castle was the residence of Cardinal Piedro de Luna (Pope Luna), who in the years of the split of the Catholic Church at the end of the XIV century became Pope Benedict XIII.

Inside the castle you can enter through the Fosk Gate or through the San Pedro Gate. At the back of the castle is the Aragon Hotel.
