Girona

A tour of Girona’s Jewish heritage with a licensed guide, a member of the local Jewish community.

Description:

Shalom! Welcome to Girona, a city known in the Middle Ages as the Mother of Israel.

Here, amid narrow streets, quiet courtyards and ancient stones, one of Europe’s most influential Jewish communities once flourished.
The Jews made up 10% of the population, Girona was the center of the study of Kabbalah, Jewish sages came here from all over the known world.
Echoes of that old era can still be felt in our city. Through Girona during the Second World War European Jews were saved.
Now the Jewish quarter of the city is considered one of the best preserved in southern Europe, and the Museum of Sephardic History is one of the most interesting in Spain on Jewish topics.
Together we will walk through the ancient streets and visit the Museum of the Jews, climb to the monastery where the Charter of the Inquisition was once written and approach the monument to Anne Frank. If desired, we will visit a modern synagogue located in a medieval building.
You will learn where the Jews lived, worked and prayed, what they earned and how they were persecuted.
I will talk about the philosophy of Nachmanides, the great sage whose ideas changed Jewish thought.

Why is this tour special?
The guide is a licensed expert on Spanish Jewish history and a member of Girona’s Jewish community.
Little-known facts – how medieval persecution affected modern traditions.
We will visit the corners that only the locals know about.

Come and immerse yourself in Girona’s 1,000-year history of Jews – sages, exiles and survivors.

“He who forgets his past loses his future.”
