St. Philip's Church

Spain, Girona (Girona)

Description:

This beautiful church is located in the northern part of the city and was built approximately in the XIV century on the site of a dilapidated Romanesque temple. According to legend, St. Philip of Africa was martyred by pagans in one of the towers of the once existing temple. In front of the church is the main attraction of the city - the figure of a lion as a symbol of the protection of the city.

Pilgrims and tourists can see the luxurious temple, which has late Roman galleries with stucco. In addition, in the northern part there is a preserved chapel of St. Narcis, built in the Baroque style. The real decoration of the church - a tall tower with an unusual spire - was reconstructed due to a lightning strike in 1581. Therefore, the top of the bell tower became flat.

Inside the church you can see Roman and early Christian sarcophagi, numerous columns of the Romanesque period and a particularly revered figure of Christ among believers. In addition, you can pray in front of the beautiful carved Gothic altar, built in the XVI century.
