Gerona Cathedral

Plaza de la Catedral, 17004, Girona, Spain

Description:

The cathedral was erected on the site where before that (in the X-XI centuries) there was a Romanesque tomb. In 1312, the construction of a new cathedral began, which was headed by brothers-architects - Henri and Jacques de Forena. Construction was carried out for several decades, during which the plans of the designers changed. In 1386 and 1416 special commissions of experts were held to determine the direction of the construction of the cathedral. They chose from two options: a basilica with a central and two side naves or a classic single-nave temple of the hall type. And in 1417, the choice was made in favor of the second method, which was considered more refined. The construction of the largest in the history of Gothic architecture nave 34 meters high and 23 width was headed by architect Guillaume Bofil. The result was a monumental structure, second only to the Roman Cathedral of St. Peter. Complete construction was completed only in 1604. Over the centuries of construction, the cathedral has become the focus of several architectural styles at once: you will find here Romanesque elements, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque.
