Gustave Eiffel Bridge across the Onyar River
Description:
The Gustav Eiffel Bridge across the Onyar River in Girona was built in 1876. This is one of the earliest buildings of the famous French engineer.
Ancient Girona is located at the confluence of four rivers. Eleven bridges were thrown over the city’s main river, Onyar. One of them was designed in 1876 by the famous engineer Gustav Eiffel. The author of the famous Paris tower during his lifetime was known as the initiator of the construction of bridges made of steel and the use of metal screeds, significantly increasing the strength of structures. Eiffel built about twenty bridges around the world, and in Girona you can see one of his most compact creations, which, however, was revolutionary for its time.
The Gustav Eiffel Bridge is a small steel structure whose supports and vaults are painted in red light. The bridge connects the two banks of the Onyar River, densely built up with modern buildings. It feels like the bridge literally grows into buildings, linking the houses rather than the shores, giving the place an added charm.
