Excursion from Verona: Borghetto - a fabulous mill town on the banks of the Mincho River

Description:

Borghetto is a magical town on the Mincho River that many tourists do not know about. This ancient village of ancient mills on the river turned into a small wonderful town, as if out of a fairy tale and from where a fabulous view of the river opens from all sides.

In the VIII-IX centuries, the Longobards built the first dwellings on the banks of the Mincho River, near an ancient ford known since Roman times.

The name "Borghetto" comes from the Longobards, which means "fortified settlement", but traditionally the name is interpreted as "Valley of the Gods".

At the end of the XIV century, Gian Galeazzo Visconti built a dam bridge across the river. Two incomplete arches have survived from the bridge, but despite the remaining ruins, the panorama is very picturesque.

Since ancient times, water has been the main source of life in this place. Having fallen under the domination of Venice in the early fifteenth century, the town flourished during this period, thanks to the constant work of mills that grinded grain into flour and purified rice. We can still admire these mills, which are the most important characteristic of Borghetto.

To date, restaurants and bars on the banks have opened in the mill houses, where you can taste typical local dishes with a glass of delicious wine and admire the surrounding panorama.

A wooden bridge was built across the river, which was decorated with vases with beautiful flowers and which fill the Borghetto with bright colors. Everything is really magical here...

The town of Borghetto is an ideal place for romantics, where you can watch the flow of the river and floating ducks on the water.

Thousands of tourists visit this magical town every year.

In one day, a tour of Borghetto can be combined with a tour of Verona (distance 30-35 minutes by car).
