Beit Shemesh

Beth Guvrin Maresha National Park

Bet Shemesh-Kiryat Gat road (no. 35) opposite Kibbutz Bet Guvrin, Jerusalem, Israel

Description:

The Beth Guvrin Maresha National Park, spread over five thousand square meters at the crossroads of the Jerusalem and Hebron roads, includes many caves in which archaeological finds were found.

Mares and Beth Guvrin were ancient cities that existed before our era. Maresh was destroyed, and Beth Guvrin was renamed Elevferopol.

Due to the fact that the soil is soft limestone, a huge number of caves were built here, which had different purposes, ranging from residential buildings, cold cellars, water storage tanks, ending with places for burial. Some of the caves are open to tourists.
