Mount Meron
located near the Israeli city of Safed
Description:
Mount Meron was, until Israel conquered the Golan Heights in the 1967 war, the highest mountain in Israel. The history of Israel, both ancient and modern, is associated with Meron, where some of the most important sights of the north are located.
Visitors come to see several places on Mount Meron. The graves of the famous rabbis Hillel and Shammai are located near Meron, and the synagogue of the third century AD is located at the foot of the mountain. Meron is known as the tomb of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai.
Rabbi Shimon was a midrash rabbi (Jewish commentary) in the third century AD. He is often cited in the Talmud (commentaries on Jewish law) as a respected expert, highly regarded by scholars of the time.
