Temple of the Holy Sepulchre
Description:
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is one of the greatest shrines of Christianity, built on the place where, according to Holy Scripture, Jesus Christ was crucified, buried and resurrected.
The modern complex includes a monumental Rotunda with a huge dome, the Altar of the Crucifixion at the top of Golgotha, the chapel of the Kouvuklia erected above the burial place of Christ, the cathedral of the Jerusalem church of Kafolicon, the underground temple of the Reception of the Life-Creating Cross, the temple of St. Helena Equal to the Apostles and several chapels.
In 1852, an agreement known as the “status quo” was adopted to divide the temple’s territory between six Christian denominations – Greek Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Syrian, Coptic, Ethiopian and Armenian – each set aside their days and hours for services.
