Gethsemane

Israel, Jerusalem, Mount of Olives

Description:

The Garden of Gethsemane is located on the western slope of the Mount of Olives near the creek of Kedron. Only a part of the garden of biblical times has survived, but there are still eight olives that were planted in the first century AD.

The Garden of Gethsemane in Christianity is revered as a place associated with the Passion of Christ. It is one of the most famous places of Christian pilgrimage. In the garden is the Gethsemane Grotto, where Christ once prayed when he retired from the apostles. Here you can see the place on the floor where the bloody sweat of Christ melted the stone and burned through it. Since 1681, the garden has been under Franciscan control.

The Hebrew word Gethsemane means "place of olives".
