Flaming monastery
Israel, Jerusalem Church of the Flagellation
Description:
The Monastery of Scourge is a Franciscan monastery in the Muslim quarter of the Old Town.
Inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The monastery is surrounded by part of Lifostrotos, or Gabbat. There Jesus was sentenced to death through crucifixion, flogging, and forced to bear the cross.
The complex consists of two churches and a museum.
The land on which the complex is now located was captured by Muslims in the late 12th century.
It was given to the Franciscans in 1838 by Ibrahim Pasha of Egypt.
The monastery of Sacramento is located next to the praetorium, where Jesus was imprisoned, ridiculed and crowned with a crown of thorns.
Pontius Pilate’s Ecce Homo speech is believed to have originated in the area where the Ecce Homo Church and the Sisters of Zion now stand.
