St. Stephen's Gate (Lion's Gate)
Description:
St. Stephen’s Gate is so named by Europeans because tradition indicates a place where a martyr was stoned not far from here.
The most popular name - Lion Gate - comes from the sculptures of the lions of the coat of arms of Sultan Bajbars.
The gate was built in 1538 by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent.
It is also famous for the fact that paratroopers from the 55th Parachute Brigade passed through the gate during the Six-Day War and unfurled the Israeli flag over the Temple Mount.
Another reason these gates are named is the beating of the first martyr at this gate. However, an earlier tradition places this execution north of the city.
You can get to the gate by public transport, namely by bus or metro.
