Burnt House Museum

The Jewish Quarter of the Old City, St. Tiferet Israel, 13, Jerusalem, Israel

About the company:

On the territory of the old Jewish Quarter of ancient Jerusalem there is a curious museum - the "ennobled" remains of the apartment house of a rich Jewish family. Based on artifacts found here (for example, coins dated to 69 AD), it was concluded that it was burned during a severe fire that destroyed Jerusalem in 70 AD. This is where the name of the museum comes from.

Archaeologists were able to establish that the house belonged to a wealthy family of high priests Katros, mentioned in the Talmud. The excavated building consists of a courtyard, a bath and four living rooms. Everything found during the excavations is covered with a roof and turned into a museum, which is located under modern residential buildings.

The museum, in addition to the house itself, presents various stone and clay objects and tools of that ancient era: jugs, furniture and more. There is also an audiovisual program in a number of languages, including Russian, telling about the excavations and history of this place and in general Jerusalem of the first century AD.
