Sambor Prey Cook - the capital of Upper Chenla

Description:

Presumably, Sambor Prey Cook was the capital of the Chenla Empire in the early 7th century. The temples are richly decorated with bas-reliefs, and the overall style of execution differs significantly from the usual buildings of Angkor. The territory of the complex is not as significant as the territory of Angkor, but in terms of the number of buildings it is impressive: in total you can count about 257 temples. Some of them are very well preserved, others are really only ruins. Best of all, three groups of Sambor Prei Kuk temples have survived to this day: Prasat Sambor, Prasat Thor and Prasat Yei Pone. Prasat Sambor includes 11 buildings made of limestone and brick. In the decoration of the walls, the influence of India is felt, the top of the main temple is crowned with a lotus flower. The Prasat Thor group includes 18 temples, the entrance to the main one is guarded by statues of lions. That is why this complex was formerly called the Lion Temple. The sanctuary with lions is better preserved than other buildings, there is an altar there. Prasat Yei Pone was also built in the 7th century and is dedicated to Shiva. The buildings are well preserved, the bas-reliefs that adorned them can also be considered. According to legend, the main temple was decorated with columns of diamonds, which, of course, have not survived to this day. A fragment of bas-reliefs from Prasat Yei Pone can be seen at the Kampong Thoma Museum.
