Cameroon

World Wetland Day

Description:

Lake Chad
This day is designed to draw the attention of the public and the government to the value of wetlands to support the sustainable development of not only the country, but also the planet. For Cameroon, this day is of great importance, since recently the problem of preserving Lake Chad is very acute.

Lake Chad is a drainless relict lake with a surface area of 300,000 square meters. But in the last forty years it has decreased by more than 20% and continues to dry out.

It is known that Chad is drying up not for the first time - paleontologists have found that this has happened 6 times in the last millennium. This is associated both with the proximity of the Sahara Desert and with extensive clearings in the forests surrounding the lake, because of which dry winds easily carry water vapor, not the least role is played by the irrational use of water.
