St. Josaphat Cathedral (Edmonton)

10825 97 Street Northwest, Edmonton, AB, Canada

Description:

The Cathedral of St. Josaphat appeared in Edmonton in 1902, thanks to the monastic order of Basilians, who founded the parish of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in the city. Through their efforts, a small church for Ukrainian Catholics of the Byzantine rite appeared. In 1938, it was decided to renew the church, for which Father Philip Ruch, who became the chief architect, was invited from Belgium.

Father Philip proposed a rather bold solution that combined elements of classical Ukrainian Baroque with Western European elements in the new church. In 1948, the construction was completed, after which the cathedral was awarded the title of cathedral.
