Edmonton International Airport
Description:
Edmonton International Airport is the main "air gate" of the Canadian province of Alberta, as well as an important transit hub throughout the country. The airport is located 26 kilometers south of the city of Edmonton and serves more than six million passengers annually.
Edmonton Airport opened in 1960, and in the seventies was recognized as the fastest growing airport in Canada. Today it is one of the ten largest airports in the country.
Its flight field consists of two asphalt runways, as well as several helipads. Since 2010, the administration of Edmonton has been conducting a large-scale reconstruction of the passenger terminal, designed to increase the capacity of the airport.
Despite the status of an international airport, the vast majority of all Edmonton destinations are domestic regional services, as well as flights to the United States. In addition, Edmonton is home to the Area Control Center, which monitors air traffic throughout Canada up to the Arctic. It is also one of the safest airports in the country - in its history there have been no dangerous accidents.
