Battalion Park

3034 Signal Hill Dr SW, Calgary, AB T3H 2X7, Canada

Description:

The Battalion Park, located on a small hill, is a very unusual place. Its main attraction is a set of geoglyphs lined with stones and visible even from space. The site was used by the Canadian Armed Forces from World War I until the 1990s as a training ground for soldiers.

The park is a staircase stretched along the slope with several levels. The central place is occupied by large white stones, of which several figures are laid out. This is not just a set of signs, each number corresponds to the number one of the four battalions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. They were trained here before going to Europe during the First World War.

The total number of stones laid in the memorial is more than one and a half thousand. Stones were hand-drawn bags from the river soldiers in their free time from training and training. After the war, this place was abandoned and gradually overgrown with grass. It was never mentioned until a local historian who had been exploring the area found it. After lengthy debate, the site was declared a historic site, and the stone designations were restored by cadets. The official opening of the Battalion Park took place in November 1991.
