The reserve was established in 1895 as a national park. Its area is more than nine thousand square kilometers, most of which serves as a reserve focused on maintaining the population of wild animals such as caribou, American elk, black bear, lynx and wolf. On the territory of the reserve there are more than two thousand rivers and lakes.
