Saguenay-Saint Laurent National Marine Park

Saguenay-Saint Laurent, Bae St. Catherine, Quebec, Canada

Description:

Saguenay–St. Lawrence Marine Park is a national marine park located in the southeast of Quebec.

The park includes only land owned by the government of Quebec and does not include all land facilities, port infrastructure and islands. The area of the park is 1245 square kilometers.

The marine park is located between two major geological formations. On the left is the Canadian Shield, which is about 4 billion years old and the north coast of the St. Lawrence River. On the right is the Appalachian mountain system.

The flora and fauna of the park are divided into three parts. At great depths there are multi-branched worms. In the areas that open during low tides - hydrophytes, algae Ascophyllum and Fucus, mussels are edible. The middle strip (deepness of about 200 meters) is inhabited by different species depending on the type of bottom: the rocky bottom is characterized by brown algae, red algae, small crustaceans, mussels and sea stars, and for sandy - various mollusks, seaworms.

In the water area of the national park live such rare species of animals and fish as beluga, blue whale, Icelandic gogol, porpoise, fin whale, humpback whale, stonefish, ordinary seal, sturgeon.
