Harrican River

Harricano River, Cochran, Unorganized, North Part, Ontario, Canada

Description:

The Harricana River is one of the main rivers of the province of Quebec and part of the province of Ontario, it belongs to the water system of James Bay. The length of the river is 533 kilometers, the area of the basin is 29,300 square kilometers.

The source of the Harricana River begins in the Val d'Or area of Quebec, and the mouth is near Hannah Bay in James Bay. The general direction of the river is from east to northwest. The river has long been considered the largest transport artery in the region, as James Bay is connected with Canada's largest Hudson Bay and access to the Atlantic Ocean.

The Harrican River first appears in the archives of the Hudson Bay Company in 1670. Later, Alexander Mackenzie mapped the entire route of the river, and in 1898 began the settlement of the coastal territory, ceded to the province of Quebec. At the beginning of the XX century, a railway was laid across the river, which became one of the symbols of the region.
