River La Grande
Description:
The La Grande River is an 893 kilometer long Canadian river in the province of Quebec. The mouth of the river is James Bay. To date, the area of the river basin, after in 1984 under the project Be-Jams in it were transferred the waters of several nearby rivers, is 177 thousand square kilometers.
8 hydropower plants were built in Quebec, which generate the same amount of electricity as all the power plants in Belgium combined. Quebec exports much of its hydroelectric power to other provinces.
Exploration of the La Grande River began in 1803 when the Hudson's Bay Company founded the Big River Post Fort. On the bank of the river there is the village of Radisson - the northernmost French-speaking settlement in the world, and an autochonal settlement of the Cree Indians, whose number is four thousand people.
