The Nottaway River

Nottavey River, Canada

Description:

The Nottaway River is a 225-kilometer Canadian river that flows in the province of Quebec. The total area of the pool is about 66 thousand square kilometers. The source of the river is Lake Matagami, the mouth - Rupert Bay James, adjacent to the famous Hudson Bay. The river basin includes 6 lakes.

In the XX century, several hydroelectric power plants were planned to be built on the Nottaway River, but the project was curtailed due to the appearance of more profitable ones. At the end of the XVII century, the name of the river on the hydrographic map sounded like “River of the Iroquois”, after the name of the tribe that invaded here in these years, and the modern name exists since the beginning of the XX century and is translated from one of the Indian languages as “serpent”. This is what the Algonquian tribes, who lived in this territory for centuries, called their enemies.
