St. Anthony of Padua Cathedral in Longei
55 Sainte-elizabeth Rue, Longueuil, Canada
Description:
The Cathedral of St. Anthony of Padua is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Church in the city of Longuei. Named in honor of St. Anthony of Padua, it is administered by the Bishopric of Longei-Nord.
The foundation of the cathedral can be attributed to the end of the XVII century, when the church parish named after St. Anthony was erected in the building of the fort. The history of the cathedral, as a separate religious structure, began only at the end of the XIX century, since then the building has been rebuilt more than once, hence the architectural mixture of styles: the main building of the temple was built in the neo-Gothic style, but the dome is an example of Byzantine Renaissance architecture.
The final appearance of the cathedral acquired at the beginning of the XX century. By the way, the parish of St. Anthony of Padua is one of the oldest in Canada. In 1984, the Quebec government included the cathedral in the list of cultural and historical monuments.
