Iqaluit Airport

Description:

Iqaluit Airport (Frobisher Bay) is located in the province of Nunavut near the city of the same name. This small airport was founded in the 1940s and served as a base for the U.S. and Canadian Air Force. Since the 1950s, it has been used as a technical stop for aircraft flying across the North Atlantic. In 1963, the airport became a civilian airport.

With the advent of the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8 aircraft, there were not many companies that collaborated with Iqaluit. However, the airport continued to operate as a place for military exercises and a stop for scientific expeditions.

In the 1980s, Air Canada and Canadian Airlines began buying up local airports, providing them with modern aircraft. The growing passenger traffic has prompted the Nunavut government to adopt a major overhaul project for 2014-2017 that will cost around $300 million. The upgrade will include the construction of a new terminal, the expansion of the car park and runway.
