Mount Mont Royal
Description:
Mont Royal is one of the symbols of Montreal. The three-domed peak, the panorama of which ends with a huge cross, rises above the city.
Mont Royal is a low mountain that is part of the Appalachian mountain system. The three peaks of the mountain do not exceed a height of 230 meters. Mont Royal has historically been an important landmark of the city. On the slopes of the hill in the middle of the XIX century, the largest necropolis of Not Dame de Nage in Canada was formed - a cemetery where several prominent politicians were buried at once, and the total number of burials exceeded the million mark for a century and a half.
On top of Mount Mont Royal was built oratorio of St. Joseph - one of the largest churches in Canada, a place of pilgrimage for millions of Christians. Also from the middle of the XVII century, a cross was installed on the top of the mountain, which became a place of worship. In 1924, a 32-meter high metal cross was installed on Mont Royal, which is illuminated at night, bringing the nightscape of Montreal to life.
