2900 Boulevard Edouard-Montpetit, Montr al, QC H3T 1J4, Canada
Description:
In the list of the world's largest educational institutions in which teaching is conducted in French, the University of Montreal is one of the first places. Its original name was Laval University in Montreal.
However, the prelate of Montreal was against and sought the university's independence from the alma mater. In 1889, the Vatican granted the university administrative autonomy. This allowed them to obtain a license under which they issued their own diplomas and made an independent choice of professors.
In 1919, the university was granted full autonomy and became the University of Montreal.
