Victoria Bridge in Montreal

Montreal, Canada.

Description:

The Victoria Bridge connects Montreal Island to the St. Lawrence River. Thanks to the construction of the bridge, Montreal became an important railway junction.

The grand opening of the bridge in Montreal took place on August 25, 1859. Before this event, crossing the river in winter was quite difficult. The freight train first passed over the bridge on December 12, 1859, a little later passenger trains began to run here.

The bridge was named after Queen Victoria.

The length of the bridge is about 3 kilometers.

The chief construction engineer was James Hodges. During construction, workers found the remains of Irish immigrants who died from a typhus epidemic. At the entrance to the bridge in their honor was erected a memorial monument known as "Black Rock" ("Black Stone").

The bridge is still in use today, with road and rail traffic. Buses on the bridge are prohibited due to weight restrictions, except for one bus number 55.
