Ravenscrag Mansion
Description:
Ravenscrag Mansion is a house located in Golden Square Mile, Montreal, Quebec. It was built for Sir Hugh Allan in 1860-1863. In 1942, his son, Sir Montagu Allan, donated the home to the Royal Victoria Hospital, which used it as a medical facility. It was at that time that the luxurious interior of the house was completely looted. The building is now known as the Allan Memorial Institute and is part of McGill University.
At the time of completion of construction, the mansion was a 5-storey house. It consisted of 72 rooms, including a basement and an attic. The interior of the house was made in Victorian style. Bright colors were used for decoration, for example, green silk linings on the walls of the dining room. There were frescoes and paintings illustrating mythological and everyday scenes, the decorative elements of which were decorated with gilding.
The ground floor includes: four main bedrooms, two latrines, two bathrooms, a living room, a dressing room and a dining room for children. On the second floor there are eight bedrooms for children and one large bathroom. The attic includes an observatory. The Ravenscrag Mansion was equipped with gas lighting as well as the most advanced water and heating technology available at the time.
