Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport
Description:
Pierre Eliot Trudeau International Airport (formerly Montreal Dorval) is Montreal’s only passenger airport located in its suburb of Dorval.
Construction of the airport began in the 1940s and was caused by increasing passenger traffic, which was not able to cope with the existing at the time airport Saint-Hubert.
A new airport with three runways opened on September 1, 1941. Passenger traffic increased every year: in 1946 – 250 million people, in the mid-1950s – more than a million, in 1961 – two million. By this time, the airport already provided destinations to all European countries and was the busiest in Canada. The construction of the new building cost the authorities $ 30 million. Reconstruction and modernization continued later.
On January 1, 2004, the airport was renamed in honor of former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Eliot Trudeau. Now it is the largest modern airport serving destinations in more than 100 countries.
