Montreal Mirabel International Airport
Description:
Mirabel International Airport is located in the province of Quebec, 39 kilometers northwest of the city of Montreal. Its opening on 4 October 1975 was timed to coincide with the 1976 Summer Olympics.
The airport, which was used by 23 airlines, had two runways and was supposed to provide all international flights. The exterior of the building is impressive – a cubic structure made of dark glass on a concrete structure was recognized as a masterpiece of art at the Expo-67 International Exhibition. It was the largest airport in the world, designed to serve six million passengers a year.
The remoteness and lack of a developed transport network did not make it attractive for passengers and air carriers. The airport was supposed to be modernized in several stages by 2025, but due to political disagreements, the project was frozen.
Since October 31, 2004, the airport has been used mainly for cargo transportation.
